World Curling: Creating a Repeatable Accreditation Model

Who are they?

World Curling is the international governing body for the Olympic and Paralympic sport of curling. Based in Perth, Scotland, the federation oversees a global calendar of competitions, bringing together athletes, teams, officials, media, broadcasters, organising committees and event partners across multiple countries each season.

With competitions taking place across different venues and regions, World Curling needed an accreditation process that could provide consistency across its international calendar while remaining flexible enough to meet the individual requirements of each event.

The challenge

Managing accreditation across a global calendar creates a unique operational challenge. Many athletes, officials, media representatives and other stakeholders attend multiple competitions throughout a season, creating the potential for unnecessary duplication if information needs to be collected from scratch for every event.

At the same time, no two competitions are exactly alike. Different stakeholder groups require different information, individuals need access to different operational zones, and each event has its own branding and badge requirements.

World Curling needed a more consistent and repeatable way to manage this complexity: one that could reduce duplication, provide greater control over access privileges and support multiple events without rebuilding the accreditation process each time.

The solution

Accredit Solutions worked closely with World Curling to create a structured accreditation model capable of supporting its international event calendar.

At its heart is a tailored accreditation matrix that defines the different roles, organisations, registration requirements and access privileges needed across World Curling’s events. This provides a consistent operational foundation that can be reused and adapted for individual competitions.

When athletes, officials and other stakeholders return for another competition, existing information can be reused where appropriate rather than collected again from scratch.

For World Curling, this means the accreditation process can build on information already held within the platform, reducing repetitive administration and creating a more efficient experience across the season.

The right access for the right people

Rather than asking individuals to decide which areas they need access to, World Curling can apply predefined privileges according to a person’s role and organisation.

For example, once a particular role has been assigned the appropriate access zones within the accreditation matrix, those privileges can be automatically applied to individuals registering under that role. This reduces manual decision-making and helps ensure people receive the access appropriate to their responsibilities.

Tailored registration for different participant groups

Different stakeholder groups can have registration journeys tailored to the information relevant to them.

Athletes, officials, broadcasters, media and organising committees can all be managed through the platform, while specific data requirements can be incorporated where needed. For example, World Curling uses a dedicated registration process for wheelchair athletes, enabling relevant accessibility requirements to be captured as part of registration.

More secure, streamlined media accreditation

World Curling also uses the Accredit Media portal to manage media accreditation across its events.

Rather than relying on open registration links, media representatives can create their own secure account, submit their information and select the events they wish to attend. This gives World Curling’s media team a more controlled and efficient way to manage applications while reducing the administrative burden of repeatedly issuing registration links and processing information manually.

Flexible badge production across global events

Reusable badge templates provide consistency across World Curling’s event calendar while allowing individual competitions to adapt logos, zoning and other event-specific details.

This provides the flexibility needed for events taking place across different countries and venues, supporting local printing requirements without creating an unnecessarily complex badge production process.

Supporting wider event workflows

The platform also supports World Curling beyond traditional accreditation.

Teams and member associations can submit uniform information through Accredit, while dedicated user views mean those responsible for areas such as media, uniforms or on-site event delivery can access only the information and functionality relevant to their responsibilities.

World Curling’s data governance processes are also supported through seasonal data deletion and renewal, helping the federation manage personal information in line with its own data retention requirements.

Instead of rebuilding processes for each competition, the federation can reuse its established accreditation structure, retain and reuse data where appropriate, adapt badge templates and consistently assign access privileges through its tailored matrix.

The result is less duplication, reduced administration and greater visibility across the accreditation process.

Importantly, following initial onboarding and support from the Accredit Solutions team, World Curling has developed a largely self-sufficient accreditation operation. Its internal teams can now manage the platform and their event requirements directly, giving them greater control and flexibility across the season.

The results

Since joining Accredit Solutions in July 2023, World Curling has processed more than 5,000 registrations through the platform, with around 350 users supported through the Accredit Media portal.

The platform supports World Curling’s international calendar, bringing registrations, role-based access privileges, media accreditation, badge production, uniform submissions and data governance together within one connected process.
